I have been reading various posts today that were written in response to the shootings at Virginia Tech. Several were of the “we should ban guns so this wouldn’t happen” variety.

Excuse me.

You are, in essence, saying, “Let’s make it illegal to own a gun and then this sort of thing won’t happen.”

Unless I am sadly mistaken — and that sort of thing occurs very rarely — it is already illegal to go around killing people at will.

A person who is willing to murder a bunch of other people is already willing to completely ignore the law. It is not unreasonable to assume that they would also be willing to purchase illegal weapons to use in carrying out their illegal actions.

So…legislating ownership of guns is unlikely to be a factor in controlling the actions of these types of criminals.

It is not hard to smuggle an illegal weapon into this country. Shit, it’s not hard to smuggle many (many) thousands of illegal people into this country, and the typical person is much larger than the typical gun.

So pull your collective heads out of your collective asses.

I can hear the muttering…

“So tell us, Gordon, what would you recommend?”

You mean, how would I fix things so this kind of tragedy would never happen again?

Folks, as far as I know, that isn’t possible.

What I would do, if I were in charge, is reinstate two long-absent concepts into our legal system:

  1. common sense
  2. personal responsibility

Meditate on that. It will be good for you.

I was very happy to start getting some updates from the Army about Gordy Jr. Today was extra-good. I got a call from Jr. at about 07:00 this morning. He is doing well. The phone connection was very spotty. He says he thinks he has a mailing address for me and is going to send a letter today.

I’ve been working on a long letter for him and as soon as I get the address am going to send it off along with goodies, etc.

What follows is a small Powerpoint file converted to Flash for easy Internet viewing. Staff Sergeant Terriance Hamilton sent this to me. He is the rear detachment commander for Gordy Jr.’s unit. Thank you SSG Hamilton!

To view it, just click here and wait for the slide-show to load. It’s about 6.5 MB. Just click on the image to navigate to the next frame.

Mikie found this cute stray dog at our office yesterday. She called all around looking for a local adoption place for him and also tried the only residence that was close to the office — no luck.

With much sadness she ended up taking him to the Houston S.P.C.A. because she realized that with the four dogs we already have, many cats, fish, and birds, we really just cannot take in yet another stray.

While she was at the S.P.C.A., she was shocked by all of the people their that were dropping off their pets for one reason or another. All of their reasons boiled down to “it’s just not convenient for us.”
