I got a call from Gordy Jr. last night and we were able to talk for quite a while. It had been a long time since I spoke with him. Gordy told me that they had a communications blackout for a while due to the recent deaths and injuries. The Army sensibly has a communications blackout right after someone gets killed until the next-of-kin can be notified.

Anyway let me give a quick recap of some of the things we talked about. On July 11′th they came under a pretty serious rocket attack. Gordy Jr. was in a PLS (Palletized Load System) when the rockets came in. He was about 30 feet away from where one exploded and the entire area was hit with shrapnel. Five people were killed during the attack and a bunch of others were wounded. Gordy Jr. is OK.

He says some of the other areas have it worse. For example Assassin Outpost gets hit pretty much every Thursday, regular as clockwork!

I’m so ready for him to come home!

Yesterday Brandon and I drove out to the Mercedes dealership at FM 1960 and I-45 to test drive the new “Smart Cars” that will be available for sell in the USA in early 2008. We had a great time. These things are a hoot to drive.

I took just a couple of pictures at the start of the Katy Flatlands Century ride on 7/15/2007. It was really rainy at the start and for the first hour. I left with a group at the very front of the starting line and the visibility was so bad we couldn’t find the route right away, which really sucked!

Eventually things cleared up…

Mikie and I had dinner last night at the Railroad Cafe. It is located at 105 N Railroad Ave in Humble, TX. Click Here for a Google Maps page.

I’m sorry to say that the experience was disappointing. The bread that was brought to our table was stale. The shrimp I had were over cooked. And poor Mikie suffered some gastric distress this morning.

It’s a shame, because this restaurant has the potential to be a really great, cozy restaurant.

I checked the mail when we got home from work today. Among other nonsense we got a free sample of Sheba Premium Cat Food. Well, as you may know, we have lots of cats that hang around the property, so my wife promptly opened this free sample and headed out to distribute the booty.

This is great stuff

In the process of doing this she stopped and remarked to me that this was really nice looking cat food. Intrigued, I glanced at the open can and was immediately struck by the strong resemblance of this cat food to premium tuna.

I, of course, felt compelled to, um, sample this sample, so I reached into the can, pinched out a bite, and popped it into my mouth. I’ve tried a lot of cat food in my life, make no mistake, but this was, by far, the tastiest cat food I have ever had the good fortune to eat.

Highly recommended!

Well in spite of the pessimistic outlook for this weekend’s weather, I decided to take a chance on a medium-length ride today. It worked out well. It was hot, but there was no rain. I rode the delightful Trek Pilot from Humble out to Old Town Spring and then up to The Woodlands. From their I continued over to Porter, then down past Kingwood and then back to Humble.

The total distance was about 52 miles. Here is an outline of the trip. If you click on the map image you can see the route in detail in Google Maps.

And after a hard ride in hot weather, nothing is better than a delightful Gin and Tonic, made (of course) with Bombay Sapphire gin!

I will be really glad when Adrian and Jacob’s new book is available.

I was sent a link to a pro photograph taken during the 2007 Tour de Braz. I went ahead a bought a copy… :-) Click on the pic for other size…
