Recently we receive a letter from Allstate. In it they say they will not be renewing our home insurance because our home falls into the category of those “most suseptible to significanat wind related damage.”

Now I’m not sure why they would say that. We are about 70 miles from the coast. We have never had a claim on our homeowner’s insurance policy. When I contacted our insurance agent’s office (Ed Dormer in Kindwood, TX) and spoke to Bridgette, she told me it “was nothing personal.”

I asked about our options. She said they could obtain insurance for us through some state-funded plan that was several times more expensive than our current policy. But I would have to first apply to at least one other company and get denied by them.

Oh and yes, I would lose my multi-policy discount with Allstate (I have auto insurance with them as well).

Here is a scan of the letter.

Allstate Cancellation

I don’t think I like these people anymore.

On 10/30/2006 I ordered a battery for the MacBook Pro from FastMac. The total cost was $109.95. My sales representative was Darlene Conners. My invoice number was FM47676.

On 11/02/2006 I received the order. Upon opening the package i notice two corners of the battery were bent. i immediately called the company (408-850-6232). I spoke to Chris. I told him the problem AND emailed a picture of the battery with the bent corners. He said he would have my sales rep contact me for a replacement.

Darlene Conners called me back and asked me to ship the battery back to this address, which I immediately did:

FastMac
ATTN: RMA 48062
1245 Laurelwood Road
Santa Clara, CA 95054

It cost me $5.26 to ship the defective battery back to them.

On 11/15/2006 I called Darlene Conners at FastMac to inquire about my replacement battery. I had sent the defective one back under RMA 48062, but have not yet received the replacement battery. She said she would make sure one gets sent out to me today.

On 11/28/2006 I sent an email to sales6@fastmac.com asking about replacement battery because I still had not received it.

Later that evening Darlene called me back and said they were shipping out the replacement battery.

On 12/01/2006 I received the replacement MacBook battery. It, too, was damaged. I again took a picture of the damaged battery and sent an email along with the picture to sales6@fastmac.com. Here is a picture of the battery. The quality is not the best – I used my cell phone:

defective_battery-20061201-001.jpg

You can see that the metal on the corner of the battery is bent.

On 12/04/2006 I called FastMac because I had not received a reply to my email from 12/01/2006. I spoke to Chris again. I forwarded a copy of the message that I had sent on 12/01/2006 to support6@fastmac.com, which apparently is the email address that Chris uses. He said he would confer with his supervisor and call me back.

At this point I am waiting to hear back from them.

On 12/06/2006 I called FastMac because I had not yet heard back from them. Spoke to Chris. He said he had forwarded my information to his supervisor but that the supervisor had been busy. He put me on hold to check on it. Said it would be one or two more days for it to be resolved.

On 12/07/2006 Darlene called me from FastMac. She said they are going to ship a new (properly-packaged) battery. In the packing it will include a return mailer for the second defective battery. Lastly, she is going to have their accounting group credit me the $5.26 that I spent to return the initial damaged battery.

On 12/11/2006 I received a replacement battery. It was packed better than the first two and was not damaged. There was a DHL return slip in it. I boxed up the defective battery for return, affixed the label, and contacted DHL to schedule a pickup. The DHL pickup confirmation number is 113202. The waybill number is 41106023044.

I checked my credit card account to see if FastMac had credited the $5.26 for the first battery that I paid to return and they have not done so yet. Sent an email to Darlene Conners at FastMac letting her know that I received the new battery and scheduled a pickup on the old battery and reminded her about the shipping cost reimbursement for the first battery that I sent back.

Later that evening I received an email from Darlene Conners saying that the $5.26 has been refunded to my CC and that it should show up on my account within 48 hours.

I have owned a Linux Certified LC2100 for almost 9 months.  Early on I had upgraded the version of Ubuntu that it shipped with and from that point on, until now, the 801.11 interface would not work correctly.

Today I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 6.11.  The upgrades in this version of Ubuntu have apparently added support for the wireless network card this laptop uses.  I had absolutely no problems configuring the wireless interface with my home 802.11g network.

Great job Ubuntu!

Just read an interesting little article posted here.

Seems that Microsoft’s spiffy new multimedia player, Zune, is not compatible with their spiffy new operating system, Vista.

Here is a quote from the article:

Zune, the new digital music player from Microsoft, is not compatible with the software giant’s new Vista operating system. Buried in the Zune website, Microsoft admits that the player is not compatible with Vista and gives no information as to when it will introduce a patch or update enabling the player to do so. Instead, users are asked to “check back soon for updates”.

Anyone surprised?

Martin forwarded this to me…

Heights Art Auction to benefit Shriners Hospital for Children

Houston artists create 40 works of art out of 40 cigar boxes

As the holidays approach, people tend to think more about those who need assistance — particularly children. This year, artists from all over the Houston area have come together to help children in need by creating works of art from a nontraditional medium — wooden cigar boxes — to be sold at a special benefit auction on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 7-10 p.m.

Held in conjunction with Hight Cigar Company’s first anniversary celebration, the proceeds of the auction will go to the Shriners Hospital for Children. The auction will be held at M2 Gallery, located at 325 W. 19th Street in Houston’s Historic Heights.

Forty artists were each given a wooden cigar box to create a work of art from, be it abstract, portrait, landscape, mixed media, collage, 3-D, or any other medium the artists chose to utilize. Each box is one of a kind and displays the style and imagination of the artist. The boxes will contain hand rolled Perfecto cigars by Hight Cigar Company and fitted with label bands matching the artwork on the boxes. The Perfectos are especially made for the auction and only 2000 of these perfect figuardos will be made.

Among the participating artists are: Aimi Dunn, John Mercado, Michael-Ann Belin, Martin de Vore, Mehak Bagai, Sorange Castillo, Susan Goettsche, Mitch Cohen, Carolyn Cohen, Max Boyd Harrison, Solomon Kane, Big Al Bartell, Laura Hodges, Alissa Fereday, Michelle Macy, Sam Van Bibber, Amie Krebbs, Christine M. Farnsworth, Cindy Folsom, Jeanne Haner, Alex Hostetler, Chip Hight, Nathan Parmar, Shawnacy McArthur, William Newton Rice, Erik Kolflat, Amy Lynch, Scott Mernelstern, Beth Harris, Fletcher Stafford, Noelle Trowbridge, Joyce Dorn, Jennifer Beam-Kresovsky, Mark Stephen Kresovsky. Silas Woodward and Kelly Ryan.

Those attending the auction must be at least 18 years of age.

Hight Cigar Company, LLC. is located at 635 West 19th Street, #201 in The Heights. For more information about the auction, future events or Hight cigars, please call (713) 802-0777 or visit the Web site at www.hightcigar.com

I have been trying an application called Pzizz. It uses computer-generated sound combined with music and vocal cues to help you take short power naps or meditative sessions.

I’ve used it a couple of times only so far but am impressed at how quickly one is able to get very relaxed, very quickly.

As an experiment this morning, I decided to see if a short (10 minute) session would alter blood pressure. I measured my blood pressure and pulse before starting the session. It was 120/80 at 79 bpm. I measured it again after 10 minutes with the application. It was 128/75 at 67 bpm.

Interesting. The systolic measurement increased by 8 mm Hg and the diastolic measurement decreased by 5 mm Hg. Pulse decreased by 12 bpm.

I made an earlier post about Yojimbo. I had been using it and liked it very much. In that post I mentioned that one of the possible alternatives was the new SOHO Notes application from Chronos.

Well I decided to go ahead and give SOHO Notes a try. I have been using it for the last month or two.

Today I have uninstalled SOHO Notes and will not be using it again. In spite of following all of the technical bulletins and other suggestions in the support forums, in spite of running the latest version with the bug fixes, etc., I still kept having repeated problems trying to keep information synchronized between just two computers.

I give up! No more SOHO Notes. Viva Yojimbo and the good folks at Bare Bones software!
