Triathlon Training, day 84

All I had scheduled for today was an easy 3-mile recovery run and some strength training. I did the recovery run on the treadmill at the hotel in Mount Pleasant. I followed that with some calisthenics. The fitness room at the hotel had only cardio equipment.

Sightseeing!

Mom, Jennifer and I had breakfast and drove all over Charleston, looking at the beautiful homes and churches. We did some shopping in the market. The day was pretty and clear but still chilly.

Our flight back to Houston was on time and we had clear skies the entire way back home.

Trip to Charleston

This was a day-off from working out and today Mom and I flew from Houston’s George Bush airport (IAH) to Charleston Municipal Airport (CHS). We had a straight-through flight (#2572) with Continental airlines. Everything went fine. One minor glitch was that the flight arrived in Houston about 30 minutes late so we didn’t leave Houston on time. But in light of all of the extreme weather over much of the N.E. right now I considered us lucky to have a flight at all.

The sky was clear and beautiful when we left Houston. As we got further and further East it started getting more and more cloudy until by the time we got to SC it was a solid blanket of clouds. There was a bit of turbulence on our descent, but nothing bad. I think Mom had a good time.

When we arrived at CHS we got our bags very quickly and picked up our rental car. It was a very nice silver Chevy Impala. This car was comfortable and roomy and handled well. It was cold and raining and we saw much flooding on the side streets as we drove from Charleston to Mount Pleasant. We arrived at our hotel, a brand-new Holiday Inn Express, without incident.

This Holiday Inn Express in Mount Pleasant is GREAT! Everything was new. The beds were great.

After we got settled we met with Jennifer and her friend Kelly and had dinner at RB’s seafood restaurant on Shem Creek.

Hill Training with Kingwood Fit

We ran laps up and down the parking garage over in Kingwood. This is the one that is located just North of the river on the East side of West Lake Houston drive. Our group met their at 05:30. Here are the stats:

Duration: 00:44
Distance: 4.3 mi
Energy: 481 kcal
HeartRate: 135 bpm (avg), 169 bpm (max)
Pace: 9:30 min/mi (avg), 6.48 min/mi (max)

I weighed myself before and after and only lost about 3 oz of weight. This is with consuming about 21 oz of fluids. I crunched the numbers and it looks like a good hydration rate for me would be about 32 oz of fluid per hour, assuming that I’m working at about the same intensity and at the same temperature (about 88 degrees).

So about 4 cups of fluid per hour or one cup every 15 minutes.

I’m going to test that theory at my next run.

And now, for something completely different…
