Morning Walk
Got in an hour walk first thing this morning. By the time I got back to the house it was already hot outside!

Just finished reading a really interesting book called Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything. It was written by Joshua Foer and published in March, 2011 by Penguin Press.
Joshua — a man with an average memory — went on to win the U.S. Memory Championship. This book chronicles his path in an entertaining and informative way. Highly recommended.
Mikie and I got in 30 minutes of cardio at the Lifetime Fitness in Atascocita. We used the Octane Fitness elliptical machines. Good workout!
We had a relaxing morning. Here is my honey making me some kind of surprise breakfast.
And what a tasty surprise it was! Bacon with a fried egg over easy on top of a crab cake…
Shadow and Dot helped a lot in the whole cleaning cages process.
As I was on my way to the gym I spotted some unfortunate citizen pulled over by an Humble cop.
At Lifetime Fitness I warmed up with 10 minutes on an elliptical machine and then 4 sets of circuit training on various Freemotion machines.
Stopped by the H.E.B. in Atascocita on the way home. Noticed that they sell various brands of Kombucha. Hadn’t noticed that before. Our daughter Chelsea makes this stuff.
Mikie made this amazing dinner – ground beef cooked and seasoned with Mexican spices served over a bed of lettuce with pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream, red onion, cheese, black olives, and salsa.
All day long I played around with some software from Daytum. Pretty interesting. That came about as a result of me reading about Lifelogging.
Had my third session of physical therapy at 07:00 this morning. The whole left knee situation is still pretty wonky. I cannot tell if physical therapy is helping or not. It still seems to me that the bulk of it is supervised stretching and weight training. I’m pretty good at doing that type of stuff without supervision, so … not sure how useful this expensive therapy is.
Mikie picked up our new glasses yesterday from the optical department at the Target’s in Humble. Still getting used to them.
Interesting site that a co-worker told me about: click here
Got these error dialogs this morning from iTunes. I ended up having to completely wipe and reinstall iTunes as per this Apple technote.
I highly recommend giving a listen to episode 13 of the Latest in Paleo podcast.
Got in a 30 minute cardio workout over at the LA Fitness by the office.
Had my first physical therapy session at N.E. Rahab in Humble. My therapist, Mary Jo, had me warm up for 10 minutes on an elliptical. The rest of the session was basically just supervised stretching and exercise. At the end of the session she showed me how to tape my left knee to help keep the kneecap in alignment while exercising. I’m not sure how much actual value there is to be had from these sessions. I think I would get as much value from just being given instructions and then turned loose at the gym.
Got in a quick cardio workout at the LA Fitness by work. Did a bit of rowing followed by elliptical.
I spent some time relaxing with Dutch and Shadow
I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to OS X version 10.6.7. I have noticed that ever since doing that iCal tends to get itself into a state where it is consuming great gobs of member and is bogging down the entire machine. If you see similar performance issues after installing this OS update you may want to try starting up the Activity Monitor app and checking out iCal.
Got in a quick cardio session in during lunch today. Per usual, drove over to the local LA Fitness and did 30 minutes on an elliptical.
Here is an interesting house I passed by on the way home from work.
I hadn’t realized it but I guess Mary’s went out of business.
The Art Car Museum is a very cool place.
Stopped by Asia Market on the way home.
Prepared cuttlefish… this is for Travis.
This guy has ears on his helmet.
OK, had an appointment for an evaluation at this Cole Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy place. Filled out a bunch of paperwork, paid a $40 deductible (ouch!) and then was measured and tested. I was given 4 basic exercises that I’m supposed to do daily and will be going back regularly over the next several weeks.
Here is a view of this place from the front:
This is part of the area where you do your rehab exercises.
A Harris County hazardous materials unit came screaming by on 59:
Do you like Shipleys Do-Nuts? I’m a huge fan of their spicy kolaches. I did not know there was a Shipleys vehicle tooling around in Houston, but here it is:
Did a 30-minute cardio session on a Life Fitness elliptical machine and followed that up with the exercises that the rehab place assigned.

Folks today is the start of the 2010 Badwater ultra-marathon. For those not familiar with this event – It is a 135 mile run from Death Valley to Mount Whitney. Damn.
Made the 06:00 workout at UniversalCrossfit this morning. Today we did 5 circuits of:
clean & jerk x 5 (95) deadlift x 5 (225) pull-ups x 5 run 300 m
My time was 24:17 and I was a sweaty dog at the end of it.
Took a short lunch break and swam for 30 minutes over at LA Fitness (which is about 2 blocks from the office). Total distance = 1600m (just under a mile).
